FixMyCryptoTax 1099-DA reconciler

Tax year 2026 · the first 1099-DA with cost basis

Your 1099-DA is missing what you paid.

Fix it before you file.

From 2026, exchanges report cost basis only for coins bought on that exchange from 2026 on. Coins you moved in from another exchange, or bought earlier, can show a blank basis. The reconciler matches your transfers between Kraken and Coinbase and finds what you originally paid for every sale.

Free preview. Full report with Form 8949 export: $19 early bird until Jan 31, 2027, then $29 per tax year · any number of transactions · 14-day refund

01 / The problem

Why your 1099-DA may show a blank cost basis.

For 2026, brokers report basis only for coins "acquired after 2025 … in an account for which the broker provided custodial services." Everything else is noncovered.

  1. 01

    Bought on Kraken in 2025

Bought before 2026, so the coins are noncovered.

  2. 02

    Moved to Coinbase

Not acquired in that account, so they're noncovered there too.

  3. 03

    Sold on Coinbase in 2026

Box 9 (noncovered) is checked and box 1g, the basis, may be blank. Blank is not $0: you enter the right basis on Form 8949, box H or K.

02 / How it works

Your exports in. Form 8949 out.

The reconciler matches the withdrawal on one exchange to the deposit on the other, carries the original purchase date and cost across, and shows every sale that still needs a basis.

04 / Filing 2025 on extension?

It works for tax year 2025 too.

If you filed for an extension on your 2025 return, the IRS can't extend the due date "for more than 6 months (October 15, 2026, for most calendar year taxpayers)" (IRS Form 4868).

A 2025 Form 1099-DA shows gross proceeds, not what you paid: "Brokers are not required to report basis information with respect to sales effected in 2025" (IRS, 2025 Instructions for Form 1099-DA). So every 2025 sale needs a basis from your own records.

The reconciler reads your full Kraken and Coinbase history: pick 2025 in the tax-year menu and it lists each 2025 sale with the original cost it found, ready for Form 8949.

07 / Questions

Before you start

Is the 1099-DA checker free?

Yes. The preview is free: reading your files, transfer matching, gains by lot method, the missing-basis list and the first 10 sales. The full report (Form 8949 export, audit trail and 1099-DA comparison) is $19 with the early-bird price until January 31, 2027, then $29 per tax year, with a 14-day refund.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your CSVs are read and processed in this browser tab. The only server call is the license check, which sends just the license key.

Which exchanges does it read?

Kraken ledgers.csv and the Coinbase transaction history CSV. For other exchanges, the free cost basis calculator takes buys and sells entered by hand.

Why does my 1099-DA show a blank cost basis?

Brokers report basis only for covered digital assets: ones acquired after 2025 in an account where the broker provided custody. Coins you transferred in, or bought before 2026, are noncovered and can show a blank basis. (IRS, Instructions for Form 1099-DA)

Do I report a blank cost basis as $0?

No. For a sale reported without basis, enter the correct basis of the property in Form 8949 column (e), and keep the records that support it. (IRS, Instructions for Form 8949)

Is there a transaction limit?

No. One flat price per tax year, any number of transactions.

Is this tax advice?

No. It is software that does math on files you provide. You choose the lot method and you file your own return.
